There’s no such word as impossible
\nHe realised one day
\nSo he took his dictionary
\nAnd he cut that word away
\nAnd he sat there feeling wonderful
\nHe thought of all the things he could do
\nThat’s when he realised
\nHe’d have to cut some other words too.<\/p>\n

So he took out his thesaurus
\nAnd he waved his magic wand
\nHe cut out unattainable
\nUndoable and beyond
\n‘Cause there’s no such word as impossible
\nThere’s nothing we can’t realise
\nIf the world and all its wonders
\nCan be cut down to our size<\/p>\n

‘Cause when you’re young
\nNothing is impossible
\nEverything’s right there for you to try
\nBut the more we learn the less we know
\nThe next step comes in letting go
\nTo understand we’re all just children<\/p>\n

And there’s no such word as evil
\nAnd there’s no such word as good
\nAnd there’s no such word as justice
\nHe got rid of them while he could
\nWith just his magic scissors
\nAnd a movement of his hand
\nHe could rid his world of anything
\nHe didn’t like or understand<\/p>\n

‘Cause when you’re dumb
\nNothing is impossible
\nEverything’s right there for you to try
\nBut the more we learn the less we know
\nThe next step comes in letting go
\nTo understand we’re all just children<\/p>\n

As the litter built up all around
\nHe had brief cause to doubt
\nThere were more words on the other side of each page
\nHe’d have to also live without
\nBut those collateral words
\nScattered on the floor
\nWeren’t needed for his perfect world
\nAnd they died in a good cause<\/p>\n

With his new truncated language
\nHe felt like a god on high
\nNo obstacles left in his way
\nLike Superman he could fly
\nHe could make the world his plaything
\nHe could soar just like a bird
\nAnd in the streets down below
\nAn ambulance was heard<\/p>\n

You know that nothing is impossible
\nBut as human beings we can but only try
\nAnd you set yourself up for a fall
\nIf you ever think you’ve sussed it all
\n‘Cause we are all just children<\/p>\n

In middle school we were told a story about an alleged “wise man” who cut the word “impossible” out of his dictionary to make some statement or other.\u00a0 Many of us immediately saw the flaw in this act of utter stupidity (what about the words on the other side of the page?), it stays with me as a warning of how destructive acts of censorship can result from what feel like positive and assertive motives.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
